Cargill Exceeding Energy Standards

In an effort to meet the Chicago Climate Exchange’s required 6% annual greenhouse gas reduction target, Cargill has announced that it has reduced emissions at its US facilities by 11%.  Cargill, long-time sponsor of SCIENCE SCREEN REPORT, credits this progress to reductions that have taken place at its US facilities over the recent years.

At its beef and pork processing plants, Cargill captures 20 to 25% of its methane emissions to use as fuel.  For two consecutive years, Cargill's corn milling plants have earned the US environmental protection agency's energy star symbol.  At this rate, Cargill is successfully making progress toward its 2015 environmental sustainability goals.

Cargill Funding Rainforest Conservation

Cargill has awarded a $3 million grant to The Nature Conservancy (TNC) in an effort to protect rainforests in Brazil.  This grant was awarded so TNC can assist Brazilian farmers harvest soy while still maintaining conservation laws.  TNC has already helped 383 farmers meet compliance; the grant is expected to assist on 17.5 million acres of land.

Titled the Responsible Soy project, TNC will be implementing sustainable farming methods to protect the Amazon.  TNC will also be monitoring deforestation with satellite imagery and field visits to keep farmers within forest code requirements.  These efforts, funded by Cargill, will help preserve the biodiversity of the Amazon rainforest.

Sail Powering Cargill Ship

Powering shipping vessels may soon take on a new look.  SkySails is equipping companies with computerized, parasail-like kites capable of reducing a ship’s fuel use by up to 35%.  This reduction in fuel can help turn around the prediction that by 2050, the shipping industry will be accountable for up to 18% of global greenhouse emissions.

Cargill, food and livestock supplier and sponsor for SCIENCE SCREEN REPORT and SCIENCE SCREEN REPORT FOR KIDS, signed up this week to have a 320-square meter kite tied to a ship that hauls loads up to 30,000 deadweight tons.  In 2012, when this kite-driven vessel is in operation, it will be the largest equipped with a SkySail kite.   Many believe that the leadership of large corporations such as Cargill, will lead the way for other shipping companies to look toward this eco-friendly way of shipping products and supplies.
